The Pattern Master: Sculpting the Foundation. Every shoe begins with a pattern — the blueprint that determines how flat pieces of leather will wrap around a three-dimensional foot. Our master pattern maker, Elena, has been with us for over twenty years, and her hands have shaped thousands of pairs. She trained in a small workshop in her native Portugal, where her family has been involved in shoemaking for four generations. Elena's gift is her ability to translate a designer's sketch into a pattern that fits like a second skin. She works with our custom lasts, adjusting curves and angles with the precision of a surgeon.
